Lantas muncul di benak kita untuk memberi Imodium, sebagaimana halnya jika manusia menderita diare akut. Amankah pil berukuran kecil yang mengandung Loperamide ini diberikan kepada anabul kesayangan?
Dilansir dari berbagai sumber, Imodium memang aman diberikan kepada kucing kesayangan saat diare. Namun hendaknya kita tidak serta merta memberikan obat ini. Sebab, ada beberapa peringatan dan pertimbangan yang harus diketahui terlebih dahulu.
Misalnya, dosis pemakaian jangan mengacu pada label karena Imodium obat diare bagi manusia. Berkonsultasi dengan dokter hewan di sekitar adalah jalan terbaik sebelum memutuskan menggunakan Imodium kepada kucing.
Lalu perlu diketahui, kucing dengan mutasi Gen MDR1 dilarang keras mengkonsumsi Imodium bila menderita diare. Alasannya, kucing dengan mutasi gen ini cenderung lebih sensitif terhadap efek negatif obat-obatan tertentu, bahkan pada dosis normal sekalipun tetap bisa menimbulkan efek buruk pada sebagian besar kucing.
Cara kerja Imodium adalah memperlambat kinerja usus dan memperkuat otot-otot di saluran pencernaan. Namun bagi kucing, Imodium berfungsi mengobati peradangan saluran pencernaan akut yang bermanifestasi berupa diare.
Nah peradangan pencernaan kucing kebanyakan disebabkan oleh kesalahan diet, perubahan pola makan, pangan kucing berkualitas rendah dan alergi. Serta tak jarang akibat infeksi bakteri.
Bila penyebab diare pada kucing akibat hal-hal diatas, maka Imodium aman diberikan sebagai obat. Akan tetapi, Imodium justru memperparah keadaan apabila diare disebabkan karena kucing keracunan. Sehingga jangan memberikan Imodium jika diare kucing penyebabnya racun.
Selain itu, jangan diberi Imodium bila kucing terdapat indikasi demam, muntah, kucing anakan, kucing hamil dan menyusui serta kucing berusia tua.
Serta jangan diberikan bersamaan dengan obat-obatan lain yang bersifat kontra terhadap Imodium seperti Antihistamin (diphenhydramine, cetirizine); Diazepam; Nalokson, Beberapa antibiotik (eritromisin, trimetoprim, sulfametoksazol); Antijamur tertentu (ketoconazole, itraconazole); Obat jantung (propranolol, quinidine, verapamil, amiodarone, carvedilol); Inhibitor oksidase monoamine (selegiline, rasagiline) dan Obat anti-parasit (amitraz).
Di sisi lain, Imodium boleh diberikan namun perlu kehati-hatian saat kucing memiliki resiko penyakit ginjal, cedera di kepala dan kucing memiliki masalah hormonal atau penyakit addison.
Mengenai efek samping pemberian Imodium kepada kucing karena diare bisa berupa sembelit, perut kembung dan diare berdarah. Bisa juga berefek depresi, perangsangan, pankreatitis dan megakolon keracuan, namun efek ini langka terjadi.
Untuk dosis pemberian Imodium, sebaiknya 0,08 mg per 1 kilogram berat badan kucing. Sementara setiap tablet Imodium ialah 2 mg. Sehingga misal berat kucing kita 6 kilogram, maka dosis pemberian hanya seperempat butir. Itupun sehari cukup sekali diberikan dan hanya selama dua hari kedepan.
Karena dosisnya kecil, sebaiknya gunakan versi Imodium cair dengan kandungan 1 miligram Loperamide per 5 mililiter atau 0,2 mg/ml.
Jika secara tidak sengaja lupa memberikan Imodium pada kucing, maka berikan segera setelah ingat atau lewati dosis yang terlewat sepenuhnya dan lanjutkan dengan jadwal pemberian dosis biasa.
Imodium adalah obat yang bekerja cepat dan biasanya membutuhkan waktu antara satu dan dua jam untuk bekerja. Namun hal itu tergantung pada kondisi dasar kucing yang menyebabkan diare, mungkin diperlukan waktu hingga satu atau dua hari sebelum membaik.
Imodium tersedia dalam tiga bentuk berbeda, yakni tablet, kapsul dan suspensi oral. Pemberian harus dipastikan dengan dosis yang akurat agar terhindar dari efek samping berlebih atau overdosis.
Seperti semua obat lain, Imodium dapat berinteraksi dengan obat tertentu dengan meningkatkan atau menghambat efeknya.
Utamakan pemberian obat anti diare bagi kucing diluar Imodium terlebih dahulu. Sebab Imodium bukan satu-satunya solusi mengatasi diare pada kucing secara menyeluruh. Ada beberapa opsi untuk mengatasi diare untuk kucing.
Antara lain Pepto Bismol , Pepcid, Kaopectate dan lain-lain. Namun tetap juga semua ini tidak aman untuk kucing. Oleh karenanya berkonsultasi dengan dokter hewan adalah suatu keharusan. Misalnya, menggunakan Pepto Bismol pada kucing membutuhkan kehati-hatian yang ekstrim, sedangkan formula Kaopectate yang lebih baru termasuk Aspirin ternyata sangat beracun bagi kucing.
